Review: The Hunstman: Winter's War

First things first, this movie is not a good movie. Not only do I dislike it but also it's just not good. The film has really mediocre direction, sloppy writing, and the film moves along at an extremely slow pace. Chris Hemsworth has plenty of muscles to impress the ladies as Eric the Hunstman but even he himself can’t muscle his way through a Scottish accent. You could find someone on Youtube with a better accent and not a lick of history in the film industry. It goes for Chastain as well in her role as Sarah, Eric’s love interest and Huntsman colleague. I’m not a fan of hers anyways but tack on a terrible Scottish accent and it just makes the viewing experience all the more merrier! On top of that, the chemistry between Chastain and Hemsworth is almost non-existent. Emily Blunt who has been amazing in just about everything she’s been in turns in her worst performance to date. When you watch her act in this film you can’t tell if she’s overacting or underacting, it is mind-boggling watching her try her best to get through this film as Elsa from Frozen. Shoot, I meant Freya the Ice Queen. On a positive note, everything that is apart of her character is actually kind of interesting but is never explored or executed well enough for me to care. The film tries to present to us that we should be as conflicted as Freya but we only get surface level material and a poor acting performance. Theron returns as the evil Queen Ravenna in a small role and her role fits the story they were trying to tell but didn’t fit the movie they were trying to sell us. Which is really unfortunate because the film tried to sell us a story based around a sibling rivalry and we got glimpses of that and those moments were great but they were too short lived. Theron, although limited with screen time takes over the screen with beauty and grace. She’s one of the film’s brightest spots. Looking at all of these characters you can tell that this film desperately needed engaging characters to make us care about this film and this universe. The film has some exciting ideas and lore it plays with but it is such a bore and contains nothing beyond what we see. Not that every film needs some deep philosophical undertone but if you’re at least entertaining you can get something out of it and ‘Huntsman’ is neither of those. On a positive note, this film has some incredible costume design. The design of these costumes gives us an idea of what type of fantasy world we’re in and in that regard the film does something well. The film also has some really solid moments of cool ideas that play with the look of goblins. The looks of the goblins in this film are an interesting take on the age-old pesky critters. Although the CGI is extremely mediocre we get some great moments of looking at some of the creatures that inhabit this world. There are also some interesting plot twists that add a new element to the story but even then you don’t really care about how it affects these characters. As I stated earlier, Theron is pretty great as Ravenna but she can’t even save this film from being bad. In conclusion, although I’ve forgot about most of this film already it’s still a pretty forgettable film just a few hours after you’ve seen it. There are a few glimpses of potential for this universe and franchise to strive but it ultimately fails time and time again. The Huntsman Winters Bore is how I would sum up this film. ‘The Huntsman Winters War’ gets a 4.2/10
