Review: The Disaster Artist

The Disaster Artist may be a film that is tough to latch onto if you’re not familiar with The Room or at least the basic knowledge of the making of the film. Although the film does a solid job of getting you familiar with most of the important aspects of Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero’s life before The Room. Treating yourself to clips of The Room and interviews with the cast members would do just the trick in getting you on the same page as the film. Above all else, The Disaster Artist is simply magnificent from start to finish. The Disaster Artist is not only the funniest film of the year, it’s also one of the best films that is sure to get Awards recognition over the coming months. Most importantly, James Franco’s dazzling performance as Tommy Wiseau is worthy of an Oscar nomination and the primary reason why The Disaster Artist works as well as it does. Considering Franco also directs you would anticipate a failure but you may end up quite impressed with how well directed the film is. It’s primary issue may be it’s plotting, but Franco keeps the roots of what makes this story so special firmly planted beneath the surface. Many have theorized that The Disaster Artist was going to be a distasteful piece that only exists to point and laugh at Wiseau. Upon seeing the film you’ll realize that The Disaster Artist is an inspirational story more than anything else. It isn’t afraid to show the world the innocence and dark side that is apart of Wiseau’s personality. It’s a comedic romp with outstanding performances that seeks to tell a story about the beauty of film-making. How inspiring it can be and how it can bring hundreds of people gathered in the same auditorium feeling the same emotions as everyone else. It speaks to everyone who’s dreamed of being a success even if it’s by accident. In an era where we all have the ability to showcase ourselves to the world through websites and mobile apps, success is around the corner and can happen in the blink of an eye. Or, you might be able to work hard towards what you want and can achieve anything despite those who shoot you down. Upon hearing this you may feel as if The Disaster Artist doesn’t really say or do anything new, but it takes the industry’s most mysterious man and makes him resonate with us. Franco quietly places clues throughout that may provide informative insight into Wiseau’s past. How broken and insecure he may be and turns the laughing stock of Hollywood into a one-of-a-kind icon. The Disaster Artist is an inspired and delightful insight into the most baffling production of a film to date. A beautiful tale that is sure to push the most nervous of wannabe movie stars even further to pursue their lifelong dream. It’s an outstanding personal piece that allows to peer further into the soul of the man, the myth, the legend, the icon, the artist, Tommy Wiseau. The Disaster Artist gets a 93/100
