Review: Jason Bourne

It's been nine years since Matt Damon has reprised his role as Jason Bourne, I guess you can say the franchise has been...Rebourne. The assassin known as Jason Bourne has returned to the summer blockbuster season! Is it as a triumphant a return as we were hoping? Find out in my non-spoiler review down below! If you've seen the film let me know what you think! If you haven't seen the film have you seen the others and how would you rank them! Happy reading! Bourne… Jason Bourne 2016’s ‘Jason Bourne’ is Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass’ third collaboration in the ‘Bourne’ franchise and now they’ve made their triumphant return...or so it seems. I’m not a big fan of the ‘Bourne’ franchise but I do enjoy three of the four previous ‘Bourne’ films. ‘Identity’ was a great origin story where we learned as Jason learned, ‘Supremacy’ was more of a crime thriller, and ‘Ultimatum’ was a straight up action film. ‘Legacy’ was entirely forgettable but each new ‘Bourne’ film brought something new to the franchise. ‘Jason Bourne’ came with a lot of anticipation from a wide array of audience members and the trailers were chalked full of the glorious Greengrass shaky cam. After the embargo lifted for the film I wasn’t exactly sure what to anticipate from this film considering the critics seemed very split on the product. Going in with a wide-open mind I can proudly say that the film is definitely good. It isn’t a bad film, it isn’t very good, but it is good and does just as much right as it does wrong. For starters, ‘Jason Bourne’ sure as hell delivers some of the greatest action sequences 2016 has to offer. The shaky cam wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be and the scenes made me clench my fists because of how intense they were. The action did have a bit of familiarity to them but Greengrass does a good job of making it loads of fun to watch. The film’s climax is probably one of, if not the best of the year and delivers some of the most exciting thrills that 2016 may offer in the action department. This is where ‘Jason Bourne’ really earns its marks alongside the performances by Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, and Tommy Lee Jones. Jones and Vikander are new to the franchise and both of them deliver quite the performances. Jones plays a really solid, threatening…uhm…threat and Vikander is proving once again why she is going to be one of the best of the best for a long time coming. Damon brings his A game once more to Jason Bourne and adds a more grizzled feel to the character this time around. All of the actors and actresses play well off of each other but the script is very generic. This is where ‘Jason Bourne’ really let me down because all of the other films have just as good of dialogue as it does action. Here we see the action get an ante up and the script fold. Whilst you forget how generic the film is when the action is erupting on screen, once the film takes its foot off the gas you realize how bland the story and dialogue is. There isn’t any line, plot point, or twist in this film that makes an impact on you as a viewer, I cannot stress enough how disappointing this is. When you go back and watch the other ‘Bourne’ films you’ll catch a few moments that really add to the character interactions. Nothing about these characters really made me care for them although their performances were as good as you’d expect. Greengrass also attempts to add more depth and meaning behind Jason’s vengeance but it falls flat considering it was never touched on before in previous films. It was a good concept but it didn’t affect the film in anyway. ‘Jason Bourne’ tries to combine all of the past ‘Bourne’ experiences and put it into one but it ultimately feels like more of the same. Some of the year’s best action and strong acting earn high praises but a generic script and boring dialogue really bog the film down. I would still recommend this film to anyone as long as they’re a fan of the franchise, have seen the original three films, and love high stakes action. ‘Jason Bourne’ gets a 6.9/10
