Review: A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time always seemed like an impossible book to translate to the screen. When Ava Duvernay (Selma) sat in her comfy director’s chair it seemed like a really great pairing. Duvernay being the up and coming director she was, and a very odd piece of source material that may end up going over well in the right hands. Unfortunately for audiences, A Wrinkle in Time is a humongous misfire for Disney and for Ava Duvernay. The film starts like a standard Disney “made for kids” flick. To your surprise, you might find yourself wishing it was over just a mere 15-20 minutes into it. Duvernay never really presents anything that “hooks” you. The trailers gave us the basic premise, but next to nothing is done with it. Which means that A Wrinkle in Time is as bland as it gets. We are gifted “neat” visual effects and some interesting sound design, but none of the actors dazzle and the writing is flat. By the time the film crosses over into the climax, you’ll be itching to check your watch to see how much longer you’ll have to endure. There is no reason to care about this story and any sort of emotional core it’s trying to grasp. Every feeling, plot point, artistic choice, or character decision is manufactured in the most contrived way possible. One could argue it’s a cash grab, but no one really cares for the book these days anyways. It’s a film that feels like it’s 15 years too late. In an era where Disney is just remaking films they’ve already made, A Wrinkle in Time can feel fresh in that regard. Anything otherwise looks just like the rest of Disney’s catalogue and their features upcoming. Large CGI sets that swallow the characters whole and continuously regurgitate them scene after scene into the next over-produced sequence. It’s a shame that a movie like this isn’t of great quality because of the studio and talent involved behind the lens. Selma was a solid feature film with inspired direction, but everything Ava attempts to do here is a frustrating mishap. You’ll leave the theater feeling as if you’ve aged more than you should’ve, and the wrinkles from all the brow furrowing will be stained to your face until the end of time. A Wrinkle in Time gets a 24/100
